Our Work & Accomplishments
The PAWS Society is dedicated to the welfare of animals, their humane treatment, and responsible pet ownership. Our major activities since founding in 1993 include: (1) Assisting local humane organizations which shelter and provide for abandonded, neglected, abused, and unwanted companion animals, (2) Assisting regional humane organizations with shelter planning and development, (3) Education of young and old alike concerning local humane problems and responsible pet ownership, and (4) Providing information and guidance to local residents who contact us with humane-related problems.
Our major accomplishments to date include:
  • Research and drafting of a new Animal Control Ordinance for Union County here in Northeast Oregon. Negotiating a five-acre land donation from local resident Martha Smutz for a new shelter site. Research and planning to establish the Lousie McNeely Animal Shelter in La Grande. Organization of the Blue Mountain Humane Association which operates the local shelter. Development and design of the Blue Mountain Humane internet website for: humane-related information, animal emergencies, pet adoptions, animal care, fund-raising, and humane education.
  • Design and production of Arf 'n Mew News to inform residents and governing agencies about local humane problems, and to activate the community, agencies, and local officials, resulting in the establishment of the Louise McNeely Animal Shelter.
  • Consultation and planning assistance to Pioneer Humane Society of Umatilla & Morrow Counties of Northeast Oregon for reorganization, revision of by-laws, animal shelter site research and development plans, and shelter layout, design, and construction plans.
  • Consultation and guidance to local residents for resolving pet animal-related problems.
On-going assistance to local humane associations with website revision and maintenance, photography of abandoned and homeless animals for adoption, assistance with fundraising, donations for needed supplies, and consultation for shelter development and maintenance.
Companion Animals that we have had the privilege of working with --
This was a great success story. Abandonded because he was blind, "Radar' found a great home after our photo session and posting.
This pup was a victim of abuse, but cared for by a local humane group. After being patched up, we scheduled a photo session which led to a new safe home.
This kitten was used as target practice by some irresponsible soul. She was our Poster Pet for a new shelter, but her gunshot injury was too great to survive the trauma.
This great dog was abandonded, but after our photo session and a search across state lines, we found a new home with lots of space to run.
